Students will be able to identify and define characteristics of introverts and extroverts.
Students will analyze a literary protagonist's personality traits using textual evidence.
Students will demonstrate understanding of plot structure (Climax, Falling Action, Resolution) by writing a creative story ending that mimics an author's style and addresses specific guiding questions.
Introvert: A person who prefers spending time in solitude, avoids being the center of attention, thinks before speaking, values close 1:1 relationships, needs time alone to recharge, and prefers quiet environments (from image).
Extrovert: A person who has large social networks, enjoys being the center of attention, tends to think out loud, loves being in large groups, gains energy from being around other people, thrives in team-oriented settings, and is outgoing and enthusiastic (from image).
Protagonist: The main character in a story.
Plot Components: Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution (from image).
Author's Style: Diction (word choice), tone, and mood.
This assignment guides students through personal reflection on personality types, character analysis of William Sleator's "The Elevator" (from image), and creative writing to complete the story's plot. Students are instructed to read "The Elevator" carefully, paying attention to the protagonist's personality. They are then asked to review a partial plot diagram (from image) and write an ending that includes the Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution, mimicking the author's style and addressing specific guiding questions. Bonus themes are provided for inspiration.
Teacher Reference Answer:
An introvert typically prefers quiet environments and solitude to recharge, often thinking deeply before speaking and valuing close relationships. An extrovert, conversely, gains energy from social interaction, enjoys being the center of attention, and thrives in group settings. One can tell by observing their comfort levels in social situations, how they recharge, and their communication style. For example, an introvert might feel drained after a large party and need quiet time, while an extrovert might feel energized and seek out more social events.
Main Idea 1: Introverts recharge in solitude, prefer quiet, and think before speaking.
Main Idea 2: Extroverts gain energy from social interaction, enjoy attention, and think out loud.
Question: based on these descriptions, are you more of an "Introvert" or an "Extrovert?"How can you tell? Be specific and incorporate examples from your personal experiences. Are you "ok" with what you are (introvert vs extrovert), or do you wish you could change? Why?Explain.

Art Teacher Feedback:
Alan, it's great that you've identified yourself as an introvert! That's a wonderful first step in understanding your own unique personality. To make your answer even stronger, think about adding a specific example from your life that shows how not liking to talk a lot connects to other introvert traits, like needing quiet time to recharge or preferring smaller groups.
Revision Suggestion:
I'm an introvert because I don't really like to talk a lot, especially in big groups, and I often feel most energized after spending some quiet time by myself.
Question: based on this story, is the protagonist (main character) more of an introvert or an extrovert? How can you tell? Include specific details and examples from the text to support your response.

Art Teacher Feedback:
Alan, you've made a strong case for Martin being an introvert, and it's excellent that you're pulling details from the story like his shyness and fear of the elevator (from image). To deepen your analysis, consider how these specific actions and feelings align with the core definitions of introversion, such as "prefers spending time in solitude" or "can be seen as reserved" (from image). This will help connect your observations directly to the concept.
Revision Suggestion:
Martin is an introvert because he is described as a "small and shy kid" who is bullied, suggesting he avoids large groups and prefers to be unnoticed, much like introverts who "avoid being the center of attention" (from image).
Question: story ending (1/2 page minimum)
Answered By Alan:
Martin finally had enough of his dad forcing him to go into the elevator. He finally pressed the button, went inside, and pressed floor 17. The elevator door then shut, the elevator started moving. Martin was really scared. The elevator then stopped. The door opened, and another person came into the elevator. He was a short and friendly grandpa. He waved hi to me and I politely smiled back. He pressed floor 16 which was directly under my floor. Once the elevator started moving again the old grandpa started the act weird. He was moving everything in his body very wildly until he finally formed into a huge old man. He had teeth as big as a t-rex and a body as big as a gorilla. He started heavily pounding on the elevator. The elevator began shaking very violently about to collapse. Snap! The elevator snapped in half and the gorilla was able to catch a hold of a nearby floor. However, Martin was stuck hanging on for his life on the nearby walls. The gorilla saw Martin and decided to finish him. He lunged towards Martin, snatched him by his arm and dragged him to the 16 floor. The gorilla started nonstop beating Martin and Martin couldn't hold it anymore. He found a metal rod nearby got a hold of it and smashed the gorilla right across his face with it. The gorilla was beat badly and was knocked unconscious. Martin found some water and started drinking but right after 1one sip he fainted. When he woke up he found himself In his room the next morning. He realized that it was just a dream. His alarm clocking waking him up getting ready for school. He went to school and came back with a bunch of stains on his clothes from people bullying him. He decided to face his fears again and decided go just go the elevator. He pressed floor 17 and the elevator started going up. It stopped at floor 15 when an old man came in. Martin got super scared and was shook with horror. He tried to stay calm until floor 17. When he arrived at floor 17 he saw that the old man was gone. When he looked Infront of him he saw a giant gorilla.
Art Teacher Feedback:
Alan, your story ending is incredibly imaginative and full of vivid, dramatic action! You've clearly put a lot of creative energy into describing Martin's terrifying experience and his brave fight. To align even more closely with the original story's style (from image) and the assignment's goal of mimicking the author's tone, consider how the original story builds suspense through psychological tension rather than fantastical elements. Think about how you can resolve Martin's internal and external conflicts in a way that feels like a natural continuation of Sleator's narrative.
Revision Suggestion:
Instead of a dream sequence and a gorilla, consider having the climax focus on Martin's internal struggle and a more realistic, yet still terrifying, confrontation with the woman, perhaps ending with a subtle, unsettling resolution that leaves the reader with a lingering sense of dread, similar to the original story's tone.
